Houston is the most populous city in the US state of Texas, this metropolis, located in the south-east of the state, owes its name to Sam Houston, the general advocate of independence from Mexico and president of the republic of Texas in the years since 1836 to 1846. Houston is the seat of Harris County and the principal city of the Greater Houston metropolitan area.

The city has a population of various ethnic and religious backgrounds and a large and growing international community. Houston is the most diverse metropolitan area in Texas and has been described as the most racially and ethnically diverse metropolis in the United States. It is home to numerous cultural institutions and exhibitions, which attract more than seven million visitors a year to the District Museum. The Museum Quarter is home to nineteen museums, galleries and community spaces. Theater District and offers year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.
